Everything was perfect here until one day, the evil appeared. It was small at first. Things started to go missing, people stopped trusting each other. Then the people started to vanish! Entire towns in the farther reaches of the land were wiped out. What was going on? It didn't take long for Queen Sugar's worst fears to be confirmed. On a small island to the northeast of Fairy Land a dark fortress had been erected, and the flag that flew over its walls was known to the fairy queen. Zevasha had returned. The dark fairy queen had been defeated and banished by Queen Sugar centuries ago, but her final fate had always been uncertain. Now it was clear that she had been biding her time and gathering her strength. The terrifying cries of her beastly pet, Kitty, signaled the start of Zevasha's invasion. The war for Fairy Land has begun! 2. STARTING THE GAME Magical Fairy Force can be played by one or two players. In the one-player mode, you will select one of eight characters and try to defeat all the others to decide the fate of Fairy Land. The two-player mode allows two players to fight each other using the characters of their choice. Using the controller plugged into jack 1, press the 1 key to start a one-player game, or the 2 key to start the two-player contest. 3. USING THE CONTROLLER Magical Fairy Force can be played with the standard 5200 joystick or the 5200 TRAK-BALL controller. When using the joystick, the stick is used to maneuver your character on the screen. Press the stick in the direction you wish to move, the farther you move the stick in a direction, the faster your on screen character will move. The lower action button on each side is used to fire your standard shot. This shot is used to destroy various on-screen objects. The upper action button on either side is used to attack your opponent. See the Attacking Your Opponent section for more details. The TRAK-BALL allows more precise movement and is the recommended controller for this game. Spin the ball in the direction you wish to move, spinning the ball faster will result in faster movement. Use the inside fire buttons to fire your standard shot, and the outside fire buttons to attack your opponent. Be sure to connect the controllers before selecting a game mode from the title screen. The game may be paused by either player by pressing the PAUSE button. While the game is paused, press PAUSE again to resume play or RESET to abandon the game and return to the title screen. 4. SELECTING YOUR CHARACTER Use your joystick or TRAK-BALL to move your selection cursor to the character of your choice. The red cursor is used to select player 1's character, the green belongs to player 2 if playing a two-player match. Once the cursor is placed over the character you wish to use, press the lower side button on your joystick or the inside fire button on your TRAK-BALL to confirm your choice. If this is a one-player game, you will then be shown the fight schedule for this game. Your first opponent will be displayed, and after a few seconds the match will begin. If you defeat this opponent, you will return to the schedule and take on another until you have defeated them all. If this is a two-player game, once both players have confirmed their character selection the match will begin. After the game is decided, you will return to the character selection screen to begin another match. Either player may press the RESET button while on the character select screen. This will abandon the current game and return to the title screen. 5. THE GAME SCREEN The game screen is divided into an upper half and a lower half. Player 1 occupies the lower half, while the upper half is used by either player 2 or the computer opponent in a one-player game. The game continues until one player has been defeated. A player loses by either running out of flight energy or losing all of their health points. Each player's flight energy level is displayed in the center of the screen as a pink line. The lower line belongs to player 1, while the upper one represents player 2. These lines will shorten over time, and if one completely disappears that player will lose their wings and fall to the ground, losing the game. Flight energy can be restored by collecting fairy dust. At the bottom and top edges of the screen are additional indicators for each player's health and attack energy, called fairy power. The red rectangles represent the number of health points each player has remaining. Every time a player is damaged, one of their health rectangles will be removed. If all four are lost, the player loses the game. Health points can never be recovered. Fairy power is displayed in a gauge on each player's side of the screen. As various targets are shot by the player, this gauge will begin to fill up. The contents of the gauge will turn pink once there is enough energy to launch a lightning bolt attack. If the gauge fills completely, it will begin to flash. This signals that a player's character-specific special attack is now available for use. 6. OBJECTS ON THE PLAYFIELD The black region in the center of the screen cannot be entered by either player. In this area, shooting stars will appear and fire shots at each player. If you contact these shots, your character will lose a health point. The shooting stars can be shot by the player, and every time you shoot one you will gain a unit of fairy power in your gauge, so shoot them as often as possible to build up your strength. Other objects will fall toward your character from the center of the screen. These begin falling slowly, but as the battle goes on they will begin to speed up. Watch for the sky to darken as time passes! Clouds are the most common objects that will appear. Contact with clouds will cause your flight energy to rapidly decrease, so be sure to avoid them. Clouds will disappear if you shoot them. Every time you shoot ten clouds, fairy dust will appear on the playfield. Fairy dust will restore some of your flight energy when you touch it. Since it only appears when you've destroyed enough clouds, it's important to shoot them whenever possible. If you fail to generate enough fairy dust, your flight energy will run out and you will lose the game! Lightning bolts will appear accompanied by a flash and a crash of thunder. Touching these will damage you, just like the shooting star shots. In addition, if you allow a lightning bolt to fall off the edge of the screen you will take another point of damage! Shoot these as soon as possible. Like shooting stars, destroying lightning bolts will generate fairy power for you to use against your opponent. Lightning bolts provide two units of fairy power when destroyed. Sometimes lightning bolts will appear on their own, but they can also be sent to your half of the screen by your opponent. 7. ATTACKING YOUR OPPONENT There are two ways to attack your opponent. The first is the lightning bolt attack. Once you've accumulated four units of fairy power, your attack gauge will turn pink. At this time, pressing the upper fire button on your joystick or outer button on your TRAK-BALL will send a lightning bolt to your opponent's half of the screen. This attack will consume four units of power from your attack gauge. The gauge will briefly turn gray after this attack is made, and during this period you may not make another lightning attack. If you fill your fairy power gauge completely, it will begin to flash. At this time, pressing the upper/outer fire button will initiate your character's special attack. See the character profiles for more information on these attacks. Each one consumes a significant portion of your fairy power and no other attacks may be made against your opponent until the special attack has completed. While your special attack is active, your opponent's flight energy will not decrease. 8. CHARACTER PROFILES Pink Barrette Age: 7 Likes: Justice Hates: Evil robots Pink Barrette is the super-hero identity of Judy, a young girl from Earth. She transforms into her alter-ego when she puts her favorite pink barrette into her hair. In this form, she makes frequent visits to Fairy Land, where she is known as a defender of justice and smiter of evil. While in her own world she often has battles with Dominic, a boy in her neighborhood with a knack for building evil robots. When Pink learns of Zevasha's attack on Fairy Land, she sets this conflict aside to lend her aid to Queen Sugar. Special Attack: Justice Fist The mighty pink fist of justice assaults your opponent from the background. Dodge the fists as they approach to avoid damage. Pork-Chop Age: 44 Likes: Sewer fruit Hates: Sewer alligators Employed as a city ratcatcher on Earth, Pork-Chop spends most of his time in the sewers with his partners Biff and Buzz. In his off-time he makes frequent visits to Fairy Land, where he is known as a cheerful enough fellow. No one knows exactly how he makes this trip, and his life there is a secret to anyone on Earth. Pork-Chop is smitten with the beautiful Queen Sugar and jumps at the chance to save Fairy Land for the queen. Special Attack: Gator Rush Two dangerous sewer alligators repeatedly rush your enemy from the sides of the screen. Look for a clear spot and avoid them as they pass. Frooty Age: 24 Likes: Candy Hates: Boredom Loyal, hyperactive, and maybe just a little insane, Frooty is a general in Queen Sugar's fairy army. On the front lines of the war against Zevasha, Frooty is serious and dedicated to her duties as a protector of Fairy Land. She has made the decision to utilize drastic new weaponry in her battles, drafting the prototype robot fairy soldier 7ZC-BX into active service. Special Attack: Lollipop Smash Frooty's lollipop weapon bounces around the other player's side in a wild fashion. This attack is not too difficult to avoid, but it costs the least fairy power of any attack, so it can be used often. Xorex Age: 35 Likes: Arctic blasts Hates: Commitment Xorex is an enigma, living in a remote mountain fortress surround by magical servants and guardians. A specialist in ice magic, Xorex shuns the outside world due to his ridiculous appearance and social awkwardness. Favoring neither Queen Sugar nor Zevasha in the ongoing conflict, he leaves his home with an unknown agenda. Is he simply seeking to test his strength, or does he have something more sinister in mind? Special Attack: Arctic Blast Your opponent is showered in a rain of deadly icicles. Find a clear path through them and try to navigate it to avoid damage. 7ZC-BX Age: 0 Likes: Frooty Hates: Enemies of Queen Sugar 7ZC-BX is the first prototype to emerge from Queen Sugar's robot soldier development program. A series of bugs in her programming caused her to develop an obsession with cleaning and she now fancies herself a maid. Despite these flaws, 7 (as she's called for short) still possesses a number of powerful weapons and the will to use them in the defense of Fairy Land. Frooty has promoted her to active service, believing that 7 can tip the scales in the fight against Zevasha. Special Attack: Atomic Cleaning Laser 7ZC-BX will begin targeting her opponent with a large cross-hair that will pursue them around screen. When the cross-hair turns red, try to clear out because the laser is coming! This sequence will occur three times before the attack finishes. Queen Sugar Age: 338 Likes: Goodness and light Hates: Nothing The powerful ruler of Fairy Land, Queen Sugar has brought prosperity and joy to all of its citizens during her centuries long reign. Nearly immortal, her power is immense and has always been used judiciously and in the service of good. Not one to cower in her castle while others fight in her name, the mighty queen has taken to the battlefield herself to defend her people. She has defeated Zevasha in the past, and she means to do it again. Special Attack: Sugar Burst Sweet projectiles launch from the far side of your opponent's playfield. These shots will detonate into large candy hearts that will vanish after a moment. Both the initial shots and the heart explosions are damaging, making this a very dangerous attack. Kitty Age: 15 Likes: Corn chips Hates: You Kitty is Zevasha's pet and bodyguard, a terrifying beast with a taste for fairies and no remorse. With razor sharp claws and a penchant for destruction, few have encountered him and lived to speak of it. All who oppose Zevasha quickly learn that they will never defeat her without getting past Kitty first. Special Attack: Litter-box Splash Kitty's paws will scratch down the sides of your enemy's screen, firing deadly litter projectiles across the playfield. Try to avoid them and don't get caught in the crossfire. Zevasha Age: 332 Likes: Crushing her enemies Hates: Queen Sugar The queen of darkness has returned to make Fairy Land her own. Defeated by Queen Sugar hundreds of years ago, Zevasha went into hiding to gather her strength. Now, her armies encroach on the land once more. As the forces of good gather against her, Zevasha makes her bid for conquest. Can she destroy Queen Sugar and bring darkness and misery to Fairy Land, or will the heroes opposing her have the final victory? Special Attack: Darkness Falls Powerful beams of dark energy fire from the center of the screen. These beams are damaging, and they also tend to section off the screen. This cuts down on your movement options and can make it very difficult to dodge the incoming fire from the shooting stars. 9. STRATEGY TIPS Learn the properties of your character's special attack. Some are designed to inflict damage, others lock-down your opponent's movement and make it difficult to dodge shots from the shooting stars. Know what you're trying to accomplish by attacking. When you launch a special attack, all of the falling objects are removed from your opponent's playfield. If timed properly, this can prevent them from grabbing the valuable fairy dust. Attacking your opponent with lightning bolts can be counter-productive in the early part of a match. Objects are still falling slowly and your opponent can easily shoot the lightning bolts for a boost to their fairy power. Later in the match when things are moving much faster a quick series of lightning bolt attacks can end up being too much for your opponent to handle. Always be thinking about how your opponent's special attack works and be ready to handle it. For example, it's generally safest to stay as far from the center of the screen as possible, but Queen Sugar's attack originates from the outside edge of the playfield. Once her fairy power is full, the outer edge becomes a very dangerous place! 10. CREDITS Game design and programming: Ryan Witmer Art and character design: Ryan Witmer, Lou Graziani 11. DEDICATION This game is dedicated to Kitty, who finally succumbed to old age in February of 2018. He was a mean old cat, but he loved his corn chips and he's still missed.
