Chapter One
===========================================================================

1.1  Why Kandinsky?
-------------------
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and graphic artist. He was born in 
Moscow on the 4th December 1866 and after studying in Moscow he moved to 
Munich at the age of 30 and opened an Art Studio. His abstract work became 
increasingly influenced by geometric constructions and by 1926 his study 
'Point and Line to Area' became a reference work of abstract art.
This point of reference to the construction of drawings with the help of 
geometric elements seemed to make Kandinsky a fitting title for this 
program.

1.2.  Thanks for registering
----------------------------
Your shareware fee is really appreciated. Without the honesty and support 
of you and other registered Kandinsky users development of Kandinsky would 
not continue. If you have any suggestions for improvements or bugs to 
report please get in touch at the address shown in the 'README.TXT' on 
your master disk.

1.2.1  Software
---------------
Kandinsky uses GDOS to save and output drawings. Without GDOS installed 
Kandinsky runs fine and you are able to create and edit drawings but you 
will not be able to save or output your work.
As far as Kandinsky is concerned there are three requirements to make 
complete use of Kandinsky:

* GDOS installed.
* A suitable ASSIGN.SYS file
* Suitable device driver(s) 

1.2.2  What's GDOS?
-------------------
Atari GDOS (Graphics Device Operating System) and its associated drivers 
are commercial software which add some useful extensions to TOS. These 
enhancements are needed by Kandinsky to:

* Save GEM metafiles; these files can be loaded into many other 
  applications and is the standard vector file format for the Atari range 
  of computers.
* Use GDOS screen and printer fonts; GDOS can generate screen and printer 
  fonts in a range of point sizes.
* Output files to a range of devices; Kandinsky can output using any GDOS 
  device driver. A vast range of drivers are available, the hard part is 
  finding them!

Many commercial applications (Timeworks, EasyDraw etc) include a copy of 
Atari's GDOS and a selection of device drivers so if you're lucky you may 
be able to salvage a working set up from your existing software 
collection.

Atari GDOS is fairly easy to find as it's normally named 'GDOS.PRG' or 
something similar and found in an 'AUTO' folder on the boot disk. Device 
drivers always end with the '.SYS' file extender and are often located in 
a 'GEMSYS', 'DRIVERS' or 'GDOS.SYS' folder. The crucial file to locate is 
'META.SYS' which is essential as it's used to save drawing files in the 
'.GEM' format used by Kandinsky. Try to find 'META.SYS' and any of the 
GDOS alternatives listed below:

* FontGDOS: Atari's replacement for its original GDOS
* FSMGDOS: Atari's first attempt at an outline font alternative to GDOS
* SpeedoGDOS: Atari's outline font alternative to GDOS
* AMCGDOS: German shareware GDOS replacement
* G+Plus: Codehead software's GDOS replacement
* NVDI: Famous combined screen accelerator and GDOS replacement

If you can't locate a copy of 'META.SYS' and one of the GDOS variants 
listed above you'll need to purchase GDOS which normally includes the 
relevant drivers for your printer and 'META.SYS'. Refer to the 
'README.TXT' on your master disk for details of your local authorised GDOS 
vendor.

1.2.3  Using a GDOS installation utility
----------------------------------------
If you purchased a copy of GDOS which includes an installation utility use 
it to set up GDOS. The install utlity will enable you to set up printer 
fonts and the 'META.SYS' drivers and create a suitable 'ASSIGN.SYS' on 
your root directory.
Unfortunately some versions of GDOS don't include an install utility so 
you'll have to create a working set-up manually. Refer to 1.2.5 for help!

1.2.4  Testing a GDOS installation
----------------------------------
Reboot your computer to install GDOS, run Kandinsky and try the following:

* Load in a drawing and try saving it.
* Load in a drawing go to the 'File' drop down menu and select the 'Print' 
  option, a dialog box appears.
* Click once on the 'Device type' pop-up menu and select the 'Metafile' 
  option. Kandinsky will search for 'META.SYS' and if you're lucky 'META' 
  will appear in the 'Device name' pop-up.
* Click once again on the 'Device type' pop-up menu and this time select 
  the 'printer' option. Again Kandinsky searches for suitable device 
  drivers and the installed printer drivers are listed in the 'Device 
  name' pop-up. Select your desired driver and click 'OK' to exit the 
  'Print' dialog.
* Select the 'Text' option from the 'Attribute' drop down menu and check 
  whether any screen and Speedo GDOS fonts you installed are available.
* Press 'F10' to save the current settings and you're outta here, have fun 
  with Kandinsky!

If something went wrong either try re-installing GDOS from the 
installation utility (refer to 1.2.3) or proceed as follows for a manual 
installation below.

1.2.5  Manual installation of GDOS
----------------------------------
As a registered Kandinsky user your Master disk (or Manual archive) 
contains an emergency 'ASSIGN.SYS' and some a few extra GDOS screen fonts 
in the 'GEMSYS' folder which you should be able to get up and running with 
any version of GDOS so long as you're familiar with the basic desktop 
functions of your Atari.

Hard disk users
---------------
a) If your boot partition doesn't contain an 'AUTO' folder create one now 
   and copy 'GDOS.PRG' (or equivalent) into it.
b) If your boot partition already contains a 'GEMSYS' folder open it and 
   copy the contents of the 'GEMSYS' folder on the master disk into it.
c) If your boot partition doesn't contain a 'GEMSYS' folder copy the 
   'GEMSYS' folder from the master disk to your root directory.
d) Copy your 'META.SYS' into the 'GEMSYS' folder.
e) If your boot partition already contains an 'ASSIGN.SYS' use the desktop 
   to rename it to 'ASSIGN.BAK'
f) If your boot partition already contains an 'EXTEND.OLD' use the desktop 
   to rename it to 'EXTEND.OLD'
g) Copy the example 'ASSIGN.SYS' and 'EXTEND.SYS' from the master disk (or 
   manual archive) onto the root directory of the boot partition. You only 
   need to copy 'EXTEND.SYS' if you are using FSMGDOS, FontGDOS or Speedo 
   GDOS (earlier GDOS versions did not have an 'EXTEND.SYS).
h) Using any ASCII text editor (Tempus, Everest etc) or word processor 
   (Write ON, First Wordplus etc) edit 'ASSIGN.SYS' and 'EXTEND.SYS' (if 
   necessary) to change the PATH from 'A:' to 'C:' (or other letter 
   corresponding to your boot partition). Save the files in ASCII format. 
   Most text editors will use this format by default but in wordprocessors 
   such as Write ON, Wordplus etc. you need to find the 'Save ASCII' or 
   'Save as text' option. If in doubt refer to the word processor manual. 
   Here's the line which needs to be edited (it's the same in both files):

   PATH = C:\GEMSYS\               ;path for drivers and fonts

i) Test the installation as outlined in 1.2.4

Single floppy disk system set-up:
---------------------------------
a) Create an 'AUTO' folder in the root directory and copy your copy of 
   'GDOS.PRG' (or equivalent) into it.
b) Copy your 'META.SYS' into the 'GEMSYS' folder.
c) Back up your master disk. Use the back up as your working disk.
d) Test the installation as outlined in 1.2.4

Twin floppy disk set-up:
------------------------
a) Create an 'AUTO' folder in the root directory and copy your copy of 
   'GDOS.PRG' (or equivalent) into it.
b) Copy your 'META.SYS' into the 'GEMSYS' folder.
c) Back up your master disk twice. Label one disk as your GDOS disk and 
   the other as your Kandinsky disk. You can delete the Kandinsky folder 
   from the GDOS disk to make way for more fonts and drivers.
d) Boot from drive 'A' with your GDOS disk and run Kandinsky from the 
   floppy in your other drive.

1.2.6  GDOS Problems
--------------------
Everyone has problems with GDOS. It's a tricky piece of software to 
set-up, there are numerous different versions and many pitfalls. Here's a 
few common problems:

* After installing GDOS and rebooting the computer crashes.
  GDOS cannot find 'ASSIGN.SYS' or 'EXTEND.SYS (if needed) or could be 
  clashing with other programs in your AUTO folder. Selectively disabling 
  other AUTO folder programs until you find the culprit.
* Can't Save, print out or fonts are missing from the output.
  Check your 'ASSIGN.SYS' PATH line is pointing to the location of your 
  fonts and drivers and that the fonts and drivers are correctly listed.
  Can't save; Either GDOS isn't installed or 'META.SYS' is missing or your 
  'ASSIGN.SYS' is faulty.
  Can't print; Either GDOS isn't installed or the device driver for your 
  printer is missing or your  'ASSIGN.SYS' is faulty.
  Font(s) missing on output; printer or metafile fonts to match screen 
  fonts missing or your 'ASSIGN.SYS' is faulty.
 
1.2.7  Hardware
---------------
Computer: Any Atari ST(e), Mega ST(e), Stacy, TT and Falcon with at least 
512kb RAM.

Resolution: Kandinsky is cleanly programmed and supports all resolutions 
above 320x200 (ST medium). Kandinsky has been tested with the MGE II, 
Crazy DOTs and Reflex graphics cards, the GEMulator and AS-Overscan and 
should work fine with all graphic extensions, please let me know if you 
experience any problems!

Output device: Because Kandinsky uses GDOS to output it is compatible with 
any output device for which a GDOS driver is available. Refer to 5.12 for 
a short list of GDOS driver names.

1.2.8  GEM metafiles
--------------------
Kandinsky works with GEM Metafiles which consist of vector graphic 
'objects' defined in mathematical terms and stored as a list of objects. 
Every time the image is drawn to the screen or sent to the printer the 
object list is used to calculate the image. Consequently vector images are 
always displayed or output at the highest resolution available on the 
output device, giving smoother images without the jagged edges normally 
associated with bitmap images.

Chapter 2 Ready Steady Go
===========================================================================

This chapter takes a quick tour around the Kandinsky user interface. The 
first time you run Kandinsky is run several things happen, various dialogs 
appear and disappear as Kandinsky searches for various components. 
Commonly the path to the vector fonts folder cannot be found and you are 
offered a chance to set the path using the File Selector. If you are in 
any doubt or would like more details refer to 8.8.

2.0  Registration
-----------------
The first time you run a new version of Kandinsky the Registration dialog 
appears. Each time you upgrade to a new version of Kandinsky this dialog 
will appear and you will need to re-enter your details and key number into 
the dialog and select 'OK'. If registration was successful you won't be 
pestered by this dialog again until your next upgrade.

2.1  Kandinsky main screen
--------------------------
After starting Kandinsky your main screen displays a toolbox window and 
optionally one or more drawing windows. If no drawing windows are 
displayed you can open a new one using the 'New' option in the 'File' drop 
down menu.
The toolbox window is shared between all drawing windows.

Important!
==========
All selectable objects (icons, buttons etc) in background windows can be 
selected by pressing both mouse buttons at the same time. If you're 
Multitasking this does depend on the other programs being well behaved!

The toolbox window always raises itself so that it is displayed over any 
active drawing window(s).

Creating objects: Move the mouse over the active drawing window, notice as 
you move over the active window the cursor changes into a small cross. 
Click once with the left mouse button and release to fix the start point, 
move the mouse and click again to fix the end point. Most drawing commands 
can be aborted at any time by pressing the right mouse button.

The click move then click again approach means objects can be easily and 
accurately positioned without causing stress on the mouse finger and 
enables access to the scroll bars, zoom, edit and grid tools in mid 
command. For example, it's possible to start a line, move to a hidden area 
of the drawing using the scroll bar, access the 'Line attributes' dialog, 
change the settings and complete the command with a final left mouse 
click.

Important!
==========
Pressing the right mouse button in the drawing window displays (where 
available) the associated parameter dialog. The currently selected drawing 
tool is displayed in reverse video in the toolbox window.

2.2  Moving around the drawing window
-------------------------------------
In addition to using the mouse in the traditional GEM manner windows can 
be moved around under the cursor using the keyboard commands detailed 
below. Because these commands adjust the scroll bars rather than moving 
the cursor these commands have no effect if the entire drawing window is 
visible.

2.3  The Drop down menus
------------------------
In addition to selecting menu options using the mouse early all menu 
options can be selected using (standardised) keyboard shortcuts.

2.4  Using dialogs
------------------
Kandinsky dialogs can be displayed in windows, using my own code or 
'flying dialogs' using code developed by Olaf Meisiek. Both options offer 
features over and above standard GEM dialogs:

* Selectable objects include an underlined character. For example [Info] 
  can be selected by pressing [Alternate]+I.
* The cursor can be positioned in text entry fields using the mouse.
* Inside text entry fields the extended character set can be accessed by 
  pressing the [Insert] key. A dialog box appears from which the desired 
  ASCII character can be selected.
* The 'Cancel' button in dialogs and alert boxes can be selected by 
  pressing the [Undo] key.
* The clipboard is supported in text entry fields. Press [Control]+V to 
  Paste, [Control]+C to Copy and [Control]+X to Cut.
* The cursor can be moved in combination with the [Control] and [Shift] 
  keys.
* In multi-line text entry fields the [Delete] and [Backspace] keys can 
  also be used. The [Shift]+[Insert] combination can be used to move the 
  text from the current cursor position to the next line.
* The 'Donkey ear' at the top right of most dialog boxes can be used to 
  move dialog boxes around the screen. A click and drag operation is used, 
  during flight dialogs become invisible.

Hints&Tips
==========
If the 'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) 
the 'Apply ' button which is available in some dialogs can be used to see 
the affect of changes immediately (without leaving the dialog).

The numerical entry fields in Kandinsky are susceptible to the often 
quoted: Garbage in = garbage out axiom. It's up to you to enter sensible 
values. Kandinsky won't break but you might suffer a nasty hiccup with 
unexpected side effects in your drawing! If you're in any doubt save your 
drawing before trying out a new command then you can always go back an try 
again.

2.5  Pop-up menus
-----------------
Each bold dialog option button contains a Pop-up menu. Click on the button 
to display the menu. Further options can be selected using either the 
mouse or keyboard. Click on an option using the mouse to select it or 
click away from the Pop-up menu to close without making a selection.

The following keyboard commands are active within Pop-up menus:

Chapter 3 The icons in turn
===========================================================================
Each of the icons in the main toolbox window is explained in turn.

3.1  Object selection
---------------------
When this icon is highlighted Kandinsky is in object selection mode. 
Elements cannot be edited unless they have first been selected. To select 
an object simply click on the desired object in the drawing window, notice 
it changes to display a selection frame. The frame looks different 
depending on the current mode. In Select or Transform mode frames features 
four or eight 'grab handles' (small filled black rectangles). In Edit mode 
the small rectangles are hollow.

If instead of your desired object a nearby or different object is 
accidentally selected simply continue to click until the desired object is 
selected. This method of operation makes it possible to easily select 
objects which lie completely within the selection frame of other 
object(s). This concept is discussed in detail in 7.2.
Multiple object selection can be achieved as follows:

a) Click and drag a selection box completely enclosing the desired 
   objects. All other selected objects outside the selection box will be 
   de-selected unless the [Shift] key is held down.
b) Click on each desired object in turn whilst holding down the [Shift] 
   key.

Important!
==========
Without the [Shift] key pressed during selection objects outside the 
selection area are de-selected. With the [Shift] key pressed any objects 
selected are added to objects already selected.

3.2  Object transformation
--------------------------
When this icon is highlighted Kandinsky enters transform mode. Any objects 
selected can be moved, copied and transformed in real time! It's easy to 
recognise selected objects by the surrounding frame with either four or 
eight grab handles. If four grab handles are displayed objects can only be 
re-sized maintaining the current width to height ratio (the aspect ratio). 
The proportional transform option is set using the 'Size proportional' 
option from the 'Settings' drop down menu. Refer to 9.11 for details.

3.2.1  Move
-----------
Using the left mouse button click once and release on the selection frame 
between (but NOT on) the grab handles and all the selected objects move in 
real time with the cursor. Because the mouse button does not have to be 
held down it's possible to use all the window controls (grid, zoom, scroll 
etc) in mid command.
If you change your mind simply press the right mouse button to return the 
moved objects to their original position. Click the left mouse button a 
second time to move the selected objects to their new position.

Important!
==========
If the Grid is active any objects moved are aligned to the grid using the 
top left hand corner as the origin or 0,0 reference point. The Selected 
objects will not be re-sized to fit the grid. If the co-ordinate display 
is turned on the relative x,y displacement of objects is displayed in real 
time giving a fine degree of control over object placement.

Hints&Tips
==========
Relative co-ordinates display both positive and negative values depending 
on the direction the cursor is moving relative to the last point.:

Positive X value; cursor moved right relative to last point
Positive Y value; cursor moved down relative to last point
Negative X value; cursor moved left relative to last point
Negative Y value; cursor moved up relative to last point

3.2.2  Copy
-----------
Objects can be copied using the method described for move except before 
the second 'placement' click hold down the [Shift] key.

3.2.3  Re-size
--------------
A selected object can be freely re-sized in both the horizontal (x) and 
vertical (y) directions. A single left mouse click on a corner grab handle 
enables simultaneous re-sizing of both the height and width of objects. 
Select an edge grab handle to re-size objects in a single direction.

A second click with the left mouse button re-sizes the object. A right 
mouse click aborts the re-size operation.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the percentage change in both the 
horizontal and vertical directions is displayed.

If the 'Size proportional' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu (see 
also 9.12) is active objects can only be re-sized maintaining the same 
width to height ratio (sometimes referred to as the aspect ratio). For 
this reason only the corner grab handles are displayed.

3.3  Object editing
-------------------
When this icon is highlighted Kandinsky enters edit mode. Any objects 
selected display control points, represented by small hollow rectangles, 
instead of selection frames.

In addition to start and end control points Bzier Objects optionally 
display dotted tangent paths terminated by anchor points, represented by 
small crosses (x).

A single left mouse click on any control or anchor point enables it to be 
freely repositioned and a second left mouse click fixes the point in its 
new position. A right mouse click aborts the operation.

If the Grid is active control or anchor points will snap onto a grid 
intersection point (vertex) if moved. Each object type has specific 
control points as detailed below:

3.4  Grid
---------
This icon is used to switch the grid on and off. The grid parameters are 
all controlled using the 'Grid' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu. 
Refer to 9.2 for more details.

Important!
==========
The grid visibility and active settings can be set independently so don't 
assume that because the grid is invisible it isn't active and vice versa.

3.5  The individual Object types

3.5.1  Line
-----------
Select this icon to generate a line through start and end points defined 
using two left mouse clicks. After the first left mouse click fixes the 
start point the line follows the cursor until either a right mouse button 
aborts the operation or the left mouse button is clicked a second time to 
define the end point.

Between drawing lines a right mouse click displays the line attributes 
dialog which can also be called using the 'Line' option from the 
'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.3 for more details.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the second bracketed pair of 
co-ordinates displays the horizontal and vertical distance, in 
millimetres, relative to the start point..

3.5.2  Polyline
---------------
Select this icon to generate a open ended polyline. Each left mouse click 
sets a further point on the polyline. In this command a right mouse click 
is used to set the end point. If the resulting polyline is unsuitable the 
[Undo] key can be used to remove it. Refer to 6.1 for more details.

Between drawing polylines a right mouse click displays the line attributes 
dialog which can also be called using the 'Line' option from the 
'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.3 for more details.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the second bracketed pair of 
co-ordinates displays the horizontal and vertical distance, in millimetres 
relative to the previous point.

3.5.3  Filled polygon
---------------------
Select this icon to generate a filled polygon. The mouse functions and 
co-ordinate display is identical to the polyline command in 3.5.2.

Between drawing filled polygons a right mouse click displays the fill 
attributes dialog which can also be called using the 'Filling' option from 
the 'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.4 for more details.

3.5.4  Markers
--------------
Select this icon to a generate a series of markers. The mouse functions 
and co-ordinate display are identical to the polyline command in 3.5.2. 
Imagine this command as a polyline with invisible paths and vertex 
markers.

Between drawing points a right mouse click displays the marker attributes 
dialog which can also be called using the 'Marker' option from the 
'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.5 for more details.

3.5.5  Rectangle
----------------
Select this icon to generate a 'hollow' unfilled rectangle. Click the left 
mouse button to fix the first corner of the rectangle, which follows the 
cursor until either a right mouse button aborts the operation or the left 
mouse button is clicked a second time to complete the rectangle.

co-ordinates displays the horizontal and vertical distance, in 
millimetres, relative to the start point..

Between drawing rectangles a right mouse click displays the 'Line 
attributes' dialog which can also be called using the 'Line' option from

3.5.6  Filled rectangle

Select this Icon to generate a filled rectangle. The mouse functions and 
co-ordinate display is identical to the rectangle command in 3.5.5.

Between drawing rectangles a right mouse click displays the 'Fill 
attributes' dialog which can also be called using the 'Filling' option 
from the 'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.4 for more details.

3.5.7  Rectangle with rounded corners

Select this icon to generate a unfilled rectangle with rounded corners. 
This command is functionally identical to the rectangle command, please 
refer to 3.5.5 for details.

Important!
==========
At this time the radius is not user-definable. The radius is device driver 
dependent. The zoom command also has no affect on this radius. It's 
possible to use the 'Change to' option, in the 'Object(s)' drop down menu, 
to convert the rectangle with rounded corners to a polygon. Refer to 7.1 
for more details.

3.5.8  Filled rectangle with rounded corners
--------------------------------------------
Select this icon to generate a filled rectangle with rounded corners. This 
command is functionally identical to the rectangle command, please refer 
to 3.5.5 for details.

Between drawing rectangles a right mouse click displays the 'Fill 
attributes' dialog which can also be called using the 'Fill' option from 
the 'Attributes' drop down menu. Refer to 8.4 for more details.

3.5.9  Circles and Ellipses
---------------------------
The fourth row on the icon tablet provides four commands to draw filled or 
unfilled circles or ellipses. Click the left mouse button to set the 
centre point for the circle or ellipse which follows the cursor until 
either a right mouse button aborts the operation or the left mouse button 
is clicked a second time to complete the command.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the second bracketed pair of 
co-ordinates displays the radius, or radii for ellipses. Between unfilled 
circle and arc commands a right mouse click displays the 'Line attributes' 
dialog. Refer to 8.3 for more details. Between filled circle and arc 
commands a right mouse click displays the 'Fill attributes' dialog. Refer 
to 8.4 for more details.

3.5.10  Circular and elliptical arcs
------------------------------------
The fifth row on the icon tablet provides four commands to draw either 
filled or unfilled arcs or elliptical arcs. Each command takes four left 
mouse clicks to complete. The first click sets the centre point, the 
second sets the radius, the third sets the start angle and the fourth 
click sets the end angle. A right mouse click at any time during 
construction of a circle or arc aborts the command.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the second bracketed pair of 
co-ordinates displays the radius, or radii for ellipses, followed in turn 
by the anticlockwise and clockwise angles together with a percentage of a 
complete shape (ideal for pie charts).

Important!
==========
0 degrees is always at the 3 O'clock position. Between unfilled circle and 
arc commands a right mouse click displays the 'Line attributes' dialog. 
Refer to 8.3 for more details. Between filled circle and arc commands a 
right mouse click displays the 'Fill attributes' dialog. Refer to 8.4 for 
more details.

3.5.11  Bzier curves
---------------------
Either unfilled or filled curves (Speedo GDOS only) can be generated using 
these commands. Polylines are converted into curves using the Bzier 
algorithm.

Kandinsky Bzier curves consist of two control points and two tangent 
paths, each tangent path terminated with an anchor point. Using the 
'Bzier tangents' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu the visibility 
of the tangent paths can be toggled on or off as desired.

The first and second mouse clicks define the start and end points for the 
Bzier curve. After setting the end point a tangent path is drawn 
originating from the start point and moves with the cursor. This tangent 
path transforms the curve in real time whilst constantly maintaining a 
tangent with the start point until a left mouse click fixes the first 
anchor point. The second tangent path now appears, drawn from the end 
point, and moves with the cursor. This path maintains a tangent with the 
end point until a left mouse click fixes the second anchor point and 
completes the Bzier curve segment.

If a further left mouse click is made it becomes the end point for a 
second Bzier curve segment. The start point for the new curve is taken as 
the end point of the previous curve segment.

Complete control over the connection between Bzier curve segments is 
provided in the 'Attributes' drop down menu, refer to 8.11 for more 
details. Once created Bzier objects remain fully editable using the 
'Edit' icon as described in 3.3.

The right mouse button, in this command, is used to set the last point and 
does not abort the command. If the co-ordinate display is turned on the 
current point attributes are displayed, refer to 8.11 for more details.

Between drawing unfilled Bzier curve segments a right mouse click 
displays the 'Line attributes' dialog. Refer to 8.3 for more details. 
Between drawing filled Bzier curve segments a right mouse click displays 
the 'Fill attributes' dialog, refer to 8.4 for more details.

3.5.12  Text and Vector text
----------------------------
These last two icons handle text entry in Kandinsky. A first left mouse 
click enables text entry. Simply enter the desired text which moves with 
the cursor until set using a second left mouse click.
Multiple line text entry is possible, use the [Return] key to start a new 
line. A right mouse click aborts the command and discards the text.

Important!
==========
In text entry mode (after the first left mouse click) it's possible to use 
the GEM Clipboard, 'Cut', 'Copy' and 'Paste' options. Refer to 6.2 for 
more details.

Between text entry a right mouse click in Text mode displays the 'Text' 
dialog from the 'Attributes' drop down menu. A right mouse click in Vector 
text mode displays the 'Vector text' dialog from the 'Attributes' drop 
down menu. In both cases refer to 8.7 for more details.

If the co-ordinate display is turned on the current line number (Z) and 
column (S) is displayed. Numbering starts from 1. The differences between 
'Text' and 'Vector text' include:

* Text uses GDOS fonts, constructed from bit images whereas Vector text 
  uses the Borland BGI vector fonts (included with Kandinsky).
* GDOS text can only be inserted in 90 degree increments whereas BGI 
  vector text can be inserted at any angle in one tenth of a degree 
  increments.
* GDOS text has a maximum size of 48pts whereas BGI vector fonts can be 
  practically any size and have a variable line thickness.

Important!
==========
Using the 'Line' option from the 'Attributes' drop down menu it's possible 
to edit BGI vector text linestyle and thickness.

Chapter 4 About Kandinsky
===========================================================================

The following chapters explain each drop down menu and each option in 
turn. Selecting the 'About Kandinsky' drop down menu option displays the 
about dialog which contains important Copyright and Registration 
information. The Version number and date is also displayed.

Chapter 5 The file drop down menu
===========================================================================
Under this menu all the file handling options are grouped together. 
Options followed by '...' display either the file selector or a dialog 
box.

5.1  New [Control]+N
--------------------
Select this option to open a new drawing window.

5.2  Open... [Control]+O
------------------------
Select this option to load an existing drawing. The file selector appears 
which can load any standard GEM Metafile drawing file. It's easy to 
recognise GEM files because they normally use the 'GEM' file extender.

Colour graphic files created using GEM Artline under GEM/3 on the PC can 
also be directly loaded. Several of the demo drawings were created using 
GEM Artline.

Kandinsky assumes you have installed a GDOS version which supports fills 
and Bzier curves. NVDI V2.10 and SpeedoGDOS are suitable.

If you experience poor quality print outs, especially if lines and curves 
are generally jerky, the chances are that your GDOS printer driver is to 
blame. The solution is to install an alternative version of GDOS which 
supports fills and Bzier curves.

5.3  Merge [Control]+D
----------------------
Select this option to merge an existing drawing from memory with the 
contents of the currently active window. The file selector appears from 
which any standard GEM Metafile can be loaded.

5.4  Save [Control]+S
---------------------
Select this option to save your work to disk, in GEM Metafile format. The 
first time the drawing is saved the file selector appears, enter the 
filename and select OK to save the drawing. The GEM file extender is added 
automatically.

Important!
==========
After a drawing has been changed an asterisk appears before the filename 
in the window title bar eg '*TEST.GEM'. The Save command cannot be 
selected unless the drawing has been changed.

5.5  Save as... [Control]+M
---------------------------
This option can be used to make a back-up copy. The file selector appears 
using which the desired filename and path can be entered. After 
successfully saving the drawing an alert box appears offering an option to 
accept the new filename and path as the current drawing or to cancel and 
retain the original filename and path.

5.6  Close [Control]+U
----------------------
Select the close option to close the active drawing window. It has the 
same function as the close icon at the top left of the drawing window.

If the drawing has been changed a dialog appears offering a last chance to 
save the drawing. Select 'Save' to save the drawing and close the drawing 
window. Like all other dialogs it's possible to cancel the dialog and 
return to the drawing window.

The close icon of the icon window is equivalent to the 'Quit' option from 
the 'File' drop down menu.

5.7  Import...
--------------
Select this option to import file formats, other than GEM Metafiles, into 
Kandinsky. Currently only the 'CSV' format is available, refer to 6.2 for 
more details. The effect is the same as if the file had been imported 
using the GEM Clipboard.

5.8  Export... 
--------------
Select this option to export file formats, other than GEM Metafiles, from 
Kandinsky. Currently Tektronix and Postscript 'PS' formats are supported. 
Because Postscript compatibility is still undergoing development refer to 
the latest on disk documentation for details.

Postscript format files can only be exported if the file 'KNDPSLIB.PS 
either resides in the same folder as Kandinsky or is defined by the 'PATH' 
environmental variable.

5.9  Page format... [Alternate]+P
---------------------------------
Selecting this option displays the Page format dialog. The following 
options are available:

Width: Sets the paper width in millimetres.
Height: Sets the paper height in millimetres.
Enlargement/Reduction: sets the current zoom factor as a percentage.
Landscape: Check the option box to output the final printout in

Important!
==========
The settings made in the Page format dialog are used to determine the 
position of the drawing on the printed page. If the Landscape option is 
selected (checked) the drawing will be rotated 90 degrees to the right and 
the height and width settings swapped over.

5.10  Print... [Control]+P
--------------------------
The Print dialog is designed to be easy to use and flexible yet powerful 
enough to provide full control of the final output .

Device type: Select your device from the Pop-up menu. These could include; 
printer, plotter, metafile, memory and graphic tablet. After selecting a 
'Device type' Kandinsky searches your 'ASSIGN.SYS' for valid GDOS drivers. 
If no drivers are available the output options are greyed out.

Device name: Select a valid driver from this Pop-up. The following GDOS 
printer drivers are examples of drivers available from various sources.

GDOS Printer driver filenames

The 'IMG-0300.SYS' driver, available from most good PD libraries and BBSs, 
converts a Kandinsky vector drawing into a GEM IMG format file. IMG files 
can be loaded into most DTP and Art packages.

Paper type: Select the appropriate option for your output device. Future 
KandinsksY versions may include Tiled output to split large drawings over 
several sheets at which point this option will take on added significance,

Zoom factor: the entire drawing can be output at any desired percentage of 
the original size. Unlike the 'Enlargement / Reduction' option available 
from the 'Page format' dialog the 'Zoom factor' setting has no affect on 
the screen display.

Info: This button displays information concerning the selected GDOS 
driver.

Boundings: This button displays a further dialog into which the Printer 
margins for each device can be stored.

The upper editable field is used to enter a descriptive title for the 
output device.

Printable area: Each of the x, y, w and h parameters can be defined to a 
resolution of 0.1 mm and are used to define a bounding rectangle for 
Kandinsky to output to. Because most output devices cannot print to the 
extreme margins it's important to refer to the relevant documentation in 
order to set sensible values for each of the parameters.

Set: This button stores the current parameters using the current title and 
stores the entry for future selection in a list window.

Delete: removes the currently highlighted parameter set from the list 
window.

Click on a previously defined parameter set to highlight it and display 
the settings in the 'Printable area' fields. Select the OK' button to exit 
the dialog and activate the settings or 'Cancel' to exit the dialog to 
leave the original settings intact.

The Printable area can be displayed in the drawing window using the 'Show 
print area' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu.

If the 'Zoom factor' in the 'Print' dialog is set to 100%  and the 'Show 
co-ordinates' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu is turned on then 
the co-ordinate display corresponds to millimetres on the output sheet.

For example, if the co-ordinate display shows (15.0, 25.0) and is 
positioned over the top left corner of the print area this corresponds to 
a 15 mm left hand margin and a 25 mm top margin.

If no Sets are defined the width and height values default to the 
values set in the 'Page format' option from the 'File' drop down 
menu.

5.11  Info [Control]+I
----------------------
The Info option displays a dialog which displays the used and free memory 
available in both bytes and as a percentage. Additionally the number of 
objects and selected objects for the active (topmost) drawing is 
displayed.

5.12  Quit [Control]+Q
----------------------
Select this option to exit Kandinsky. Depending on the options set in the 
'Program' option from the 'Settings' drop down menu confirmation dialog 
boxes may appear offering a last chance to save each open drawing. 
Optionally the printer, dialog box screen position and other program 
settings can also be saved to the 'KNDINSKY.INF' file. Refer to 9.1 for 
more details.

Chapter 6  The Edit drop down menu
===========================================================================
The 'Edit' menu is the first place to look if you want to change any 
aspect of an existing object. The Atari clipboard protocol is fully 
supported to enable easy exchange of data between windows and other 
applications.


6.1 Undo [Undo]
---------------
The Undo option can take back the last command executed in most cases. If 
it's not possible to Undo the last command the message 'not possible' is 
shown after the ':' in the Undo menu entry otherwise a description of the 
'undo-able' command is displayed.

Undo works after all the following actions:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Object creation, selection and edit
* Cut, Delete and Paste of selected objects
* Object transformation
* Object grouping and ungrouping
* Object Move, Distortion, Copy, Mirror, Rotate and ordering
* Attribute changes
* All Undo actions (sometimes called Redo)

6.2  Clipboard Support
----------------------
6.2.1  An overview of the Clipboard
-----------------------------------
The Clipboard enables easy File exchange between different windows and 
applications.

For example you could copy a graphic image from Kandinsky to the clipboard 
then change to your favourite document processor and paste the image 
straight in.

The reverse action is also possible, you could save a caption for a 
graphic image to the Clipboard from your favourite text editor then Paste 
the text into Kandinsky.

There are two pre-requisites for successful file exchange::
1) The other application must also support the Atari Clipboard.
2) The applications must recognise and support the file format to be 
   exchanged.

6.2.2  Clipboard options and file formats
-----------------------------------------
Kandinsky supports file exchange with the Clipboard in GEM Metafile, ASCII 
text and CSV (Comma Separated Values) formats.

GEM Metafiles; are the standard vector file format supported by most 
applications which handle vector graphic files. Kandinsky can cope with 
most non-standard variants to this much abused format including the latest 
V4.0 Colour GEM Metafiles.

ASCII TXT; most disk 'README' files are in ASCII text format and they're 
easy to identify because they are can be read using the built-in desktop 
'Show' command.

CSV; a comma separated values file is a simply a formatted ASCII text file 
where each line consists of a series of values separated by commas. Many 
databases, spreadsheets and word processors can handle CSV format. One 
advantage over plain text is that it is structured which facilitates 
automatic searching and sorting. Refer to 6.2.5 for more details.

6.2.3  Cut [Control]+X
----------------------
Select this option to copy all selected objects in the topmost (active) 
Kandinsky window to the Clipboard, the selected objects are then deleted.
Using the Cut command during text editing copies the text, in ASCII 
format, to the clipboard and deletes the corresponding text from 
Kandinsky.

Using the Cut command when the topmost window is a dialog box copies the 
text line under the cursor, in ASCII format, to the clipboard and deletes 
the corresponding text from Kandinsky.

6.2.4  Copy [Control]+C
-----------------------
Functions like the Cut command detailed above except after copying objects 
or text they are not deleted from Kandinsky.

6.2.5  Paste [Control]+V
------------------------
If the topmost open window is a drawing window Kandinsky searches the 
clipboard for a GEM Metafile. If a GEM Metafile is located any selected 
objects in the Kandinsky drawing window are de-selected and the contents 
of the GEM Clipboard file copied into the drawing window and selected.

If Kandinsky cannot find a GEM Metafile it looks for a CSV file instead. 
If a CSV format file is found Kandinsky calculates the scaling for the 
axes and then the data is read in. The first column becomes the X data and 
the second column the Y data. Here's an example CSV file:

During text editing operations or within dialog box text entry fields, 
Kandinsky searches for ASC format text files.  In such cases ASCII text is 
pasted into Kandinsky at the current cursor position.

6.3 Delete [Backspace]
----------------------
Select this option to delete all selected objects from the topmost 
Kandinsky drawing window.

6.4 Select all [Control]+A
--------------------------
Select this option to select all objects in the topmost Kandinsky drawing 
window.

6.5 De-select all [Control]+H
-----------------------------
Select this option to de-select all objects in the topmost Kandinsky 
drawing window.

6.6  Clipboard Info [Alternate]+K
---------------------------------
A dialog box appears displaying the Clipboard path and the number of 
Clipboard files (SCRAP.*).

6.7  Text input [F5]
--------------------
This option displays a dialog box consisting of a seven line text editor. 
Each line can contain up to sixty characters. Using the Clipboard Cut, 
Copy and Paste commands it's easy to import, edit and format text strings 
for inclusion into Kandinsky drawing windows. Various keyboard commands 
are provided for use within Kandinsky dialog boxes, refer to 2.4 for 
details.

6.9 Show current font...
------------------------
Select this option to display a dialog containing the currently active 
GDOS font. Using this dialog during text entry characters not normally 
available directly from the keyboard can be entered. Hold down the [Shift] 
key and click on the desired characters to insert them at the current 
cursor position.

6.9  Cycle window [Control]+W
-----------------------------
Each open window, including dialogs and the tool palette, is 'topped' 
(made active) in turn. The sequence follows the order in which the windows 
were opened.

Chapter 7  The Object(s) drop down menu
---------------------------------------
All the options in the Object(s) drop down menu affect selected objects in 
the active Kandinsky drawing window.

7.1 Change to... [Alternate]+U
------------------------------
Selecting this option displays the Change to Pop-up menu. Refer to 2.5 for 
details on how to use Pop-up menus.
Using this menu it's possible to convert selected object(s) to a different 
type:

Possible object conversion types

If you select an unsupported conversion from the Pop-up it will simply be 
ignored. The elegant simplicity of this command hides its awsome power! 
For example rounded rectangles can be converted to polygons which 
overcomes the limitation mentioned in 3.5.7. A rectangle can be converted 
into an ellipse which fits exactly into the box previously occupied by the 
rectangle. It's worth experimenting to find all the possibilities, 
remember you can always convert the objects back again.

7.2 Object placement
--------------------
The 'To foreground' and 'To background' drop down menu options used in 
conjunction with the 'Write Mode' option from the 'Attributes' drop down 
menu provide control over the interaction and visibility of completely or 
partially overlapping frames.

For example, a black text frame remains visible when placed over a grey 
rectangle. However if you select the grey rectangle and move it to the 
foreground using the 'To foreground' option and now change the rectangle 
'Write mode' to 'Overwrite' the text disappears.

To foreground [Control]+F: Select the object(s) to be placed in front of 
other objects and select the 'To foreground' option.

To Background [Control]+B: select the object(s) to be placed behind other 
objects and select the 'To background' option.

7.3 Object grouping
-------------------
Grouping provides a convenient method of linking objects together for easy 
manipulation.

Group [Alternate]+B: Select the desired objects, either by left mouse 
clicking on each object whilst holding the [Shift] key down or by using a 
selection window or a combination of both techniques. Click on a selected 
frame to de-select it. After the desired objects are selected group them 
together using the 'Group' option.

Ungroup [Alternate]+D: Previously grouped objects can be split apart again 
using this option.

Group management: Grouped objects can themselves be grouped together and 
this provides a useful technique to manage the component parts of larger 
drawings. Think of grouped groups as nested brackets in an equation if 
this helps!

Ungrouping objects removes the top level of grouping but any sub-groups 
remain intact. For example, ungrouping the 2nd level group shown above 
leaves the 1st level group intact.

7.4 Object Alignment
--------------------
This powerful option makes it easy to position objects or groups of 
objects relative to one another.

Define align area [Alternate]+G: Before objects can be aligned an  'align 
area' must first be defined'. Select the desired object(s) to form the 
'align area' followed by the 'Def. align area' menu option.

Hints&Tips
==========
It's possible to define the entire drawing window as an 'align area' which 
is an easy way to centre a drawing within the drawing window. Click and 
drag to select a small area containing  NO objects then select the 'Def. 
align area' option.

Show align area [Alternate]+H: If this option is ticked the current 'align 
area', if any, is shown on screen as a grey area.

Important!
==========
In some cases the 'align area' may not be visible because it maybe hidden 
under black rectangular object. This command is NOT affected by the 
current Grid snap settings.

Align [Alternate]+I: Select the desired object(s) followed by this menu 
option. The Align object(s) dialog appears offering check box options to 
align selected objects either horizontally, vertically or in both 
directions with the defined 'align area'.

Horizontal: if the 'Align horizontal' option is checked the left/right 
edge or imaginary centre line of the selected object(s) will be aligned 
with the 'align area' taking into account the XOffset and Outside options. 
Refer to fig 1 and table 1 for more detail.

Using the figures and tables you should be able to align objects to each 
other as desired. The arrows shown in figs 1 and 2 indicate the direction 
a positive X or Y Offset value will offset the object being aligned.

7.5 Equi-space Hor. [Alternate]+W
---------------------------------
Using this options it's possible to equally space (equi-space) object 
horizontally. Select at least three objects (think about it!) followed by 
the desired menu option. The spacing is defined by the distance between 
the first two objects selected. The objects are now equally spaced in the 
horizontal direction.

Important!
==========
Because the first two objects remain unchanged this command is NOT 
affected by the current grid settings.

7.6 Equi-space Ver. [Alternate]+E
---------------------------------
Identical to the previous option (7.5) except a selected object, or number 
of objects, will be equally spaced vertically instead of horizontally. 
Text objects, in particular, benefit from being tidied up using this 
command. Refer to 7.7 for more details.

7.7 Mirror Hor. [Alternate]+X
-----------------------------
Using this option a selected object, or number of objects, can be mirrored 
horizontally. Each object is individually mirrored about its own imaginary 
centre line.
Grouped objects are mirrored as a group about the imaginary centre line of 
the group selection frame. Refer to 7.3 for an explanation of object 
grouping.

7.8 Mirror Ver. [Alternate]+Y
-----------------------------
Identical to the previous option (7.7) except a selected object, or number 
of objects, can be mirrored vertically. Refer to 7.7 for more details.

7.9  Rotation... [Alternate]+J
------------------------------
Select this option to rotate object(s). The 'Rotate object(s)' dialog 
appears into which the rotation angle can be entered in degrees to a 
precision of 0.1 decimal degrees. Enter positive values for anticlockwise 
rotation and negative values for clockwise rotation. Each object is 
individually rotated about the centre point of its selection frame.
Grouped objects are rotated as a group about the centre point of the group 
selection frame. Refer to 7.3 for an explanation of object grouping.

Chapter 8
===========================================================================

The Attributes drop down menu contains all the object specific parameters. 
Bear in mind that some objects may be affected by more than one attribute. 
For example, vector text is affected by both the 'Line' and 'Vector text' 
settings.
All the options in the 'Attributes' drop down menu affect selected objects 
in the active Kandinsky drawing window.

8.1 Colour... [Alternate]+C
---------------------------
Select this option to set the border colour of selected objects. The 
'Select colour' dialog appears in which the 'Colour' pop-up can be used to 
choose from one of the sixteen colours available. If the 'Windows in 
dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 'Apply ' button 
can be used to see the affect of changes immediately. To change the fill 
attributes of filled objects refer to 8.4.

8.2  Write mode... [Alternate]+Z
--------------------------------
A pop-up menu appears from which the following text drawing modes can be 
selected:

Overwrite; text in the active colour, surrounded by a white border, is 
placed in the foreground.

Transparent; text in the active colour is placed in the foreground.

Invert; text in the 'opposite' colour to the underlying objects or 
background is placed in the foreground. For example, black text over a 
white background or object, red text over green, green text over red and 
white text over black.

Erase; text is placed inside a border of the active colour is placed in 
the foreground. The text colour is determined by the underlying objects or 
background.

Important!
==========
Text exported to Postscript format is converted to 'transparent' format.

8.3  Line... [Alternate]+L
--------------------------
Select this option and the 'Line attributes' dialog appears. Each option 
is preceded by a small square box which can be used to activate or 
de-select individual options. A filled box denotes an active option. If 
the 'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 
'Apply ' button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately. The 
following attributes affect lines, outline objects and vector text 
outlines. Filled objects are also affected if the 'Perimeter/Outline' 
option is active in the 'Fill attributes' dialog (refer to 8.4 for 
details).

Width; sets the line width in increments of 0.1 mm.
Pattern/Linestyle; a pop-up appears containing a selection of linestyles. 
If the line width exceeds 1.1 mm the linestyle is not applied.

Start; a pop-up appears offering a choice of square, rounded or arrowed 
line start styles.

End; a pop-up appears, offering a choice of square, rounded or arrowed 
line start styles.

8.4  Fill... [Alternate]+F
--------------------------
Select this option and the 'Fill attributes' dialog appears. Options 
preceded by a small square box can be used to activate or de-select 
individual options. A filled box denotes an active option. If the 'Windows 
in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 'Apply ' 
button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately.

Colour; a pop-up menu appears from which one of up to sixteen colours can 
be selected.

Outline/Perimeter; a check box enables a Perimeter/Outline to be toggled 
on/off. If the check box is crossed the Perimeter/Outline is displayed 
according to the settings in the 'Line attributes' dialog (refer to 8.3 
for more details).

Shadow; a check box enables a shadow to be toggled on/off. If the check 
box is crossed the Shadow is displayed according to the settings in the 
'Shadow attributes' dialog (refer to 8.5 for more details).

The fill itself is defined by two further pop-up menus. The first pop-up 
menu specifies the fill type and the second is used to select the options 
for each fill type.

Currently six different fill types are available, None, Monocolour, 
Greytone, Pattern, Hatch and Greyscale. A seventh Selfdefined/User defined 
option will be added in a future version. The greyscale option displays an 
entry field, preview area and scroll arrows instead of a pop-up menu. 
Enter the desired greyscale value in the range 0-255 and click inside the 
preview area just to the left of the scroll arrows to preview the 
specified value. Additionally the scroll bars can be used to select the 
desired value.

8.5  Shadow attributes [Alternate]+S
------------------------------------
Select this option and the 'Shadow attributes dialog appears. Shadows can 
only be applied to filled objects. Options preceded by a small square box 
can be used to activate or de-select individual options. A filled box 
denotes an active option. If the 'Windows in dialogs' option is active 
(refer to 9.3 for details) the 'Apply ' button can be used to see the 
affect of changes immediately.

The Colour, Fill type and fill options are set as described for the 'Fill 
attributes' refer to 8.4 for details. The shadow offsets are defined in 
millimetres, in  increments of 0.1 mm, using the X-Offset/X-Dstnc and 
Y-Offset/Y-Dstnc number entry fields. The direction of offset is 
determined by the sign of the values as detailed below:

Positive X value; shadow offset to right of selected object
Positive Y value; shadow offset below selected object
Negative X value; shadow offset to left of selected object 
Negative Y value; shadow offset above selected object

8.6  Markers... [Alternate]+M
-----------------------------
Select this option and the 'Select marker height & type' dialog appears. 
If the 'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) 
the 'Apply ' button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately.

Enter the desired marker size directly into the numerical entry field and 
select the on-screen symbol, used to represent each maker, from a pop-up 
menu. Options include; point, cross, asterisk, square, star and diamond.

8.7  GDOS Text... [Alternate]+T
-------------------------------
Select this option and the 'GDOS font selector' dialog appears. The dialog 
contains fours separate areas:

Font list; Kandinsky uses the ASSIGN.SYS to find the available GDOS screen 
and SpeedoGDOS fonts these appear in the font list window from which the 
desired font can be selected by clicking on it.

Point size list; select the desired point size using the mouse. Unlisted 
point sizes can be generated by highlighting '(frei) User' at the top of 
the point list and entering the desired size into the numerical entry 
field underneath the list.

Text effects; the usual Bold, Light, Italics, Underlined and Outline 
options are available. Selection is made using using the check boxes, 
click once to cross the box and activate the effect and again to cancel 
it.

Preview font; the font, point size and any active effects are displayed 
here. Any changes made to the options in the dialog are reflected in the 
preview window which makes it easy to check the final effect. Click 
anywhere inside the preview window to regenerate the font sample with the 
new settings.

In cases where only the '6x6 system font' is listed there are two 
possibilities. The most likely reason is that GDOS has not been installed. 
Refer to Chapter 1 for details on setting up GDOS. The second possibility 
is that no screen fonts are available, either because of a problem with 
your ASSIGN.SYS or simply that you haven't got any!

Vector fonts can cause problems if their internal identification (ID) 
number is the same as one of your bitmapped fonts. For example the 
bitmapped font 'Dutch' and the vector font 'Dutch 801 Bold Italic'. In 
this case the bitmapped 'Dutch' simply replaces the vector font 'Dutch 801 
Bold Italic'. This is a problem caused by SpeedoGDOS and there's nothing 
Kandinsky can do about it!

8.8  Vector text... [Alternate]+V
---------------------------------
Kandinsky can use BGI vector fonts included with Pure C. In order to work 
with these typefaces Kandinsky must know where they are located. If 
Kandinsky cannot find these fonts an alert box offers you a chance to use 
the file selector to locate and store the path and names of the fonts so 
Kandinsky doesn't have ask for the path each time it's run. (Just in case 
you're interested Kandinsky sets up an environmental variable 
'BGI_FONTS'). Select the option and the 'BGI font selector' appears. The 
dialog contains three separate areas:

Font list; Kandinsky loads any BGI fonts and displays them in the font 
list window from which the desired font can be selected by clicking on it.

Settings; the following options are available:

Proportional; a check box toggles between proportional and monospaced 
characters. Proportional spacing is active when the check box is enabled 
(crossed).

Character height; the character height in millimetres, in increments of 
0.1 mm can be entered into the numerical entry field.

Width/height; this numerical entry field sets the width to height ratio 
(sometime referred to as the aspect ratio) of the selected font. To 
maintain the width/height ratio of the font enter a value of 1 into the 
dialog. To create a condensed font enter a value smaller than 1 and to 
create an expanded font enter a value greater than 1. Here's a few 
examples:

Width = 2 gives double width characters
Width = 0.5 gives half width characters
Width = 0.33 gives one third width characters etc. 

Angle; the text angle can be specified in 0.1 degree increments using this 
numerical field. 0 degrees  is at 3 'O clock and angles are defined 
anticlockwise (following normal mathematical conventions). Here's a few 
examples:

Angle = 90 (or -270) degrees draws text vertically up the screen.
Angle = 180 (or -180) degrees draws text horizontally across the screen 
towards the left, upside down.
Angle = 315 (or -45) degrees draws text down towards the bottom right.

Preview font; after making adjustments click anywhere inside the preview 
window and the font will update to reflect the new settings. The angle 
setting is not displayed because the font would not be visible inside the 
preview window!

Hints&Tips
==========
Vector text is affected by the 'Line attributes', refer to 8.3 for 
details. Changing the line start and end styles from square to rounded can 
make a big difference to the appearance of the BGI vector fonts.

8.9  Text alignment... [Alternate]+A
------------------------------------
Select this option to align text objects within its text frame. To align 
objects to each other use the 'Align' function detailed in 7.4. If the 
'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 
'Apply ' button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately. The 
'Text alignment' dialog offers the following options:

If the 'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) 
the 'Apply ' button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately.

Horizontal; alignment can be either left, right or centred.

Vertical; alignment can be either to the top edge, bottom edge or placed 
in the middle.

These settings also determine the position of the crosshair when 
positioning new GDOS text objects.

Angle; this setting is used to set the angle of both GDOS and BGI vector 
fonts. 0 degrees  is at 3 'O clock and angles are defined anticlockwise 
(following normal mathematical conventions). Vector and GDOS text are 
handled differently as follows:

GDOS fonts; can only rotated in 90 degree increments. Speedo GDOS fonts; 
can be freely rotated.

8.10  Kerning...
----------------
Select this dialog and the 'SpeedoGDOS kerning' dialog appears if 
SpeedoGDOS is installed, otherwise this option remains greyed out. If the 
'Windows in dialogs' option is active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 
'Apply ' button can be used to see the affect of changes immediately. 
SpeedoGDOS fonts support both Track kerning and Pair kerning, the options 
are implemented as follows:

Track kerning; four buttons from 0 to 3 can be selected. The lower the 
setting the more space beween characters.

Pair kerning; a check box offers two options:

Crossed; pair kerning is active. Speedo fonts internally store a list of 
kerning pairs. If any of these pairs occur in your text the spacing 
between them is optimised. For example, an 'e' following a 'T' is tucked 
slightly underneath the top bar of the 'T'. This is designed to improve 
the 'fluidity' of the text.

Important!
==========
Unfortunately, at this time, there isn't a Metafile (META.SYS) driver 
which stores kerning information so unless you store the drawing in a 
printer file you will lose the kerning infomation.

Default	Uncrossed; Kerning pairs are ignored.

8.11  Point attributes
----------------------
The following menu options offer utilities to handle Bzier curves. These 
options are stored in 'KNDINSKY.INF' and only available in 'Edit' mode. 
Refer to 3.3 for details. If the 'Show co-ordinates' option is active 
Bzier options are displayed in brackets after the co-ordinates.

Hints&Tips
==========
Use the F Keys from the drawing screen to avoid changing the overall shape 
of the Bzier curve.

8.11.1  Point as corner [F6]
----------------------------
Activate this option to generate a non-tangential connection (sometimes 
referred to as a cusp) between two consecutive Bzier curve segments. Left 
mouse click on the appropriate control point then select this option. When 
this option is active a tick precedes the drop down menu entry and the 
word 'Corner' appears in the co-ordinate line, if displayed.

8.11.2  Vertex translates [F7]
-----------------------------
If this option is active tangent path(s) and anchor point(s) associated 
with each control point translate (move) along with the control point, 
otherwise the control point moves but the anchor point(s) remain 
stationary. Left mouse click on the desired control point then select this 
option. When this option is active a tick precedes the drop down menu 
entry and the word 'Translates' appears in the co-ordinate line, if 
displayed.

Important!
==========
The tangent paths and anchor points associated with a multi Bzier curve 
segment always translate along with the associated control point 
irrespective of this setting.

8.11.3  Bzier visible [F8]
---------------------------
If this option is de-activated the Bzier segment following the selected 
control point is hidden. Left mouse click on the desired control point 
then de-select this option. When this option is active a tick precedes the 
drop down menu entry and the word 'Visible' appears in the co-ordinate 
line, if displayed.

8.11.4  Line instead of Bzier [F9]
-----------------------------------
Select this option to convert the Bzier segment following the selected 
control point to a line. Left mouse click on the desired control point 
then select this option. When this option is active a tick precedes the 
drop down menu entry and the word 'Line' appears in the co-ordinate line, 
if displayed.

Chapter 9
===========================================================================

All the global settings for Kandinsky can be found under this drop down 
menu. These settings are saved in the 'KNDINSKY.INF' file and restored at 
run time.
 	
9.1  Program [Alternate]+O
--------------------------
Select this option and the 'System defaults' dialog appears. Eight 
separate check box options are available:

9.1.1  XOR for selection frames
-------------------------------
Default: XOR enabled (box crossed); in this mode selection frames and 
buttons are displayed and removed without screen redraws. Each pixel of 
the selection frame and its associated buttons are simply inverted (XORed) 
when the frame is drawn and inverted again when the frame is removed. This 
method is much faster but theoretically not 100% up to date.

XOR disabled (box clear); in this mode selection frames and buttons are 
drawn over the background and any underlying objects and the screen is 
redrawn again when the selection frame is removed. It's safe but much 
slower, use it if you experience redraw problems.

9.1.2  XOR in Design mode
-------------------------
Edit functions are also affected by this option.

XOR enabled (box crossed); objects selected in this mode simply have their 
pixels inverted (XORed). If the object is edited, for example, by 
re-sizing the object it's possible the original image may remain on screen 
even though it has been re-sized. This minor problem is easily cured by 
pressing the [Esc] key to redraw the screen.

Default: XOR disabled (box clear); this mode is faster because a screen 
buffer is created to store a second copy of the main screen. After an 
object has been edited the screen buffer refreshes that part of the screen 
which is somewhat faster than regenerating the screen using the [Esc] key.

Hints&Tips
==========
If you are short of memory use the XOR enabled option. This frees up the 
memory which by default is used for the screen buffer. In ST high 
(640x400) this saves 32kb.

9.1.3  Mouse trouble?
---------------------
Crossed; if you are using a TOS versions 1.02 or earlier it's possible for 
TOS to lose track of the crosshair cursor if you move it too quickly over 
the menu bar and the mouse cursor disappears! If you experience this 
problem select this option and Kandinsky will send 'wind_update' calls to 
TOS which should fix the problem.

Default: Uncrossed; If you're using TOS 1.04 or later select this option.

9.1.4  Timer event monitors windows
-----------------------------------
With all TOS versions earlier than TOS 4.0 there is no easy way for an 
application to know if a window has been opened over it.
Using this option you can force the windows to be checked at a preset time 
interval, in seconds. Enter the desired value into the numerical entry 
field. To avoid redraw problems it's recommended that this option is not 
turned off.

9.1.5  Show Busy messages
-------------------------

9.1.6  Mini toolbox
-------------------
Kandinsky reads this setting at run time and depending on the setting 
stored in 'KNDINSKY.INF' displays either the normal or mini toolbox icon 
panel. The setting is saved using either the 'Save settings' option from 
the 'Settings' drop down menu (refer to 9.18 for details) or the 'Save 
settings automatically' option (refer to 9.1.8 for details).

Crossed; the mini toolbox will be displayed next time Kandinsky is run (if 
the setting is saved).

Default: Uncrossed;  the normal toolbox will displayed next time Kandinsky 
is run (if the setting is saved).

9.1.7  Confirm Quit Program
---------------------------
Crossed; Kandinsky will exit without displaying its exit dialog. The alert 
box(es) asking for confirmation concerning drawing changes still appear as 
normal.
Default:
Uncrossed; Kandinsky displays its exit dialog asking for confirmation 
before exiting.

9.1.8  Save settings automatically
----------------------------------
Default: Crossed; on exiting Kandinsky will automatically save your 
current settings in the file 'KNDINSKY.INF'. Refer to 9.18 for more 
details.

Uncrossed; the current settings are lost when Kandinsky is exited.

9.2  Grid... [Alternate]+R
--------------------------
Select this option and the 'Grid settings' dialog appears which is used to 
configure the grid settings for the topmost drawing window. Each drawing 
window can be assigned different grid settings, if no drawing window is 
available this option is greyed out. If the 'Windows in dialogs' option is 
active (refer to 9.3 for details) the 'Apply ' button can be used to see 
the affect of changes immediately. The following options are available:

Important!
==========
Grid active; the grid can be active even if the grid is not drawn, and 
vice-versa. A check box offers two options: Crossed; the grid is 
activated. New objects will be multiples of the active width and height 
settings because the cursor can only be moved in increments of these 
values.

Uncrossed; the grid is not active and the cursor moves freely.

Active width; specify the horizontal grid spacing, in 0.1 mm increments, 
in the numerical entry field. Active height; specify the vertical grid 
spacing, in 0.1 mm increments, in the numerical entry field.

Important!
==========
Draw grid; the grid can be drawn even if the grid is not active, and 
vice-versa. Displaying a grid with small width and height values takes a 
disproportionate length of time to draw and if you need to display a fine 
grid the 'Points instead of lines' option is recommended. The grid will 
not appear in your output. A check box offers two options: Crossed; the 
grid is drawn.

Uncrossed; the grid is not drawn.

Draw width; specify the horizontal grid spacing, in 0.1 mm increments, in 
the numerical entry field. Draw height; specify the vertical grid spacing, 
in 0.1 mm increments, in the numerical entry field. A further check box 
offers an option to display the grid as points instead of lines:

Crossed; points at each grid intersection point (vertex) are drawn instead 
of horizontal and vertical lines. This method is much faster.

Uncrossed; horizontal and vertical grid lines are displayed on screen.

9.3  Window...
--------------
Select this option and the 'Windows defaults' dialog appears. The 
following options are available:

9.3.1  Dialogs in windows
-------------------------
Dialog(s) in windows can remain open on the desktop and using the 'Apply' 
option, where available, selected objects can be conveniently edited. 
There are unfortunately several disadvantages:

* Each window uses memory. If Kandinsky runs short of memory the 'Dialogs 
  in windows' option is automatically de-selected.
* There's a limit to the number of open windows TOS can handle (although 
  various utilities exist to extend this).
* Windowed dialogs take longer to draw.

The decision is yours. This option is set using a check box:
Default: Crossed; windows are drawn in dialogs.
Uncrossed; dialogs are not windowed.

9.3.2  Centre windows
---------------------
A check box offers two options:

Crossed; dialogs are always centred on the screen.
Default: Uncrossed; dialogs are drawn on screen at their last opened 
position.

9.3.3  Auto raise windows
-------------------------
A check box offers two options:
Crossed; windows are automatically topped when the cursor moves over them. 
This method is ideal in single tasking mode and makes accessing the 
toolbox window much easier. It becomes troublesome in multitasking 
environments where multiple applications and dialogs are open on the 
desktop and windows start auto raising themselves!

Default: Uncrossed; windows are topped normally.

9.3.4  Background events
------------------------
A check box offers two options:
Default: Crossed; background events allowed
Uncrossed; background events not allowed

9.3.5  New window at run time and associated options:
-----------------------------------------------------
A check box offers two options:
Default: Crossed; A new window is opened each time Kandinsky is run. The 
defaults for a new window can be set as follows:

Default zoom; a numerical entry field enables the default zoom factor of 
70% to be set as desired.

Grid options; by default the grid is inactive and not visible. The 
settings available here are a duplicate of those found in the 'Grid 
settings'  dialog, please refer to 9.2 for full details.

Uncrossed; Kandinsky will not open a new window each time it's run.

9.4  Screen...
--------------
Select this option to display the Defaults dialog from which all the 
general Screen settings can be configured.

9.4.1  Bzier quality
---------------------
Enter a percentage value in this field to control the accuracy of 
on-screen display 'quality' of Bzier curves. The higher the value the 
more accurate the curves but this is at the expense of redraw and 
calculation time. The default value of 60% is suitable for most purposes.

9.4.2  Colours to save
----------------------
Enter the number of colours from the VDI Palette to retain. The default 
value of 16 saves the first 16 colours in the palette which protects 16 
colour graphics from losing their colour palette when loaded in other 
resolutions.

9.4.3   Pixel size
------------------
The 'Pixel width' and 'Pixel height' fields are used to change the size of 
a screen pixel in micrometres. This makes it possible to fine tune your 
monitor so that, with the Zoom set to 100%, 1 cm in the drawing displays 
as exactly 1 cm on the monitor screen.

The default values of 372 micrometres is a good starting point at 640x400 
(ST high) resolution. If you run Kandinsky at 640x200 (ST medium) the 
'Pixel width' reduces to 169.

Important!
==========
Unfortunately there is a fly in the ointment! GDOS typefaces are scaled to 
90dpi (dots per inch) and in order to maintain the exact proportion 
between text and graphic objects in you will need to enter 282 micrometres 
for both the 'pixel width' and 'pixel height' in 640x400 (ST high) 
resolution. In 640x200 (ST medium) resolution double the 'pixel height' to 
564 micrometeres.

9.4.4  Correction factors
-------------------------
The correction factors 'Point', 'Height' and 'Arbpt' fields make it 
possible to fine tune the on-screen and printed display of typefaces. Most 
users can happily ignore these fields and leave the default values 1.0, 
0.79 and 1.0 well alone!

However if you know what you are doing these values modify the VDI calls 
'vst_point', 'vst_height' and 'vst_arbpt32' which control the on-screen 
display of typefaces. If the on-screen text looks fine but appears garbled 
or overlapped when output first check your Pixel size settings as detailed 
in 9.4.3 (above) then try decreasing the Arbpt' field value in small 
steps, eg 0.9, 0.8, 0.7 etc.

9.4.5  Colour to grey
---------------------
Check this option to display colour GEM Metafile fills as grey patterns. 
Naturally monochrome monitor users will normally use this option. There 
are however limitations, halftones and hatch patterns, lines, circles arc, 
etc are not handled.

9.5  Printer
------------
Select this option and the 'Printer defaults' dialog appears. The 
following options are available:


Bzier quality; the output quality of printed Bzier curves can be set 
independently to the screen quality. Enter the desired percentage into the 
numerical entry field.

Grey factor; use this setting to reduce the number of grey levels. The 
value entered is divided into 256 to give the number of grey levels. For 
example a value of 4 gives (256/4=64) 64 grey levels.

Colour to grey; this setting determines how colour fills are handled. Only 
colour fills without halftone patterns are affected, lines, circles, arcs, 
halftones and hatch patterns etc are not handled. A check box offers the 
following options:

Uncrossed; colours are not converted to greyscale values.
Default	Crossed; colours are converted to greyscales values.

9.6  PostScript...
------------------
Select this option and the 'Postscript defaults' dialog appears. The 
following options provide a measure of control over the exported PS file:

Line pattern for thick lines; although thick lines can be displayed on 
screen for Postscript output they must be converted to a fill pattern. a 
check box offers the following options:

Uncrossed; thick lines are also displayed as fill patterns.

Default: Crossed; thick lines are displayed normally but replaced by a 
fill pattern when exported to Postscript.

Halftone width; sets the width in pixels. The higher this value the more 
memory will be needed to output the Postscript file.

Halftone resolution; sets the resolution in dpi (Dots per Inch).

Examples:
=========
Screen output; Set the 'Halftone width' to 16 (or 32) and set the 
'Halftone resolution' to 72 (or 90)dpi.

Laser output; set the 'Halftone width' to 64 pixel and the 'Halftone 
resolution' to 300 dpi.

9.8  Bzier tangents [F2]
-------------------------
Activate this option to display tangent lines during Bzier construction. 
When this option is active the drop down menu entry is preceded by a tick 
and can be toggled on/off as desired, even during mid command.

9.9  Show co-ordinates [F3]
---------------------------
Activate this option to display co-ordinate information in the active 
drawing window status line during object construction. The option is 
active when the drop down menu entry displays a tick and can be toggled 
on/off as desired, even during mid command.

Hints&Tips
==========
Kandinsky operates faster and more smoothly if the co-ordinate display is 
turned off, remember it's easy to toggle the co-ordinate display on/off.

9.10  Use crosshair [F4]
------------------------
If you don't like the small cross cursor you can change to a full window 
crosshair style cursor by activating this option.

9.11  Show print area
---------------------
This option provides control over the display of the print boundaries set 
in the 'boundings' dialog. The boundaries are displayed if this option is 
ticked. Refer to 5.10 for more details.

9.12  Size proportional
-----------------------
When this option is active a small tick is displayed in front of the menu 
entry and the aspect ratio of objects is maintained during re-sizing. 
Selected objects now only display 4 corner grab handles because the 4 edge 
grab handles would distort the width/height proportion. Refer to 3.2.3 for 
more details.

9.13  Easy Rider
----------------
The following four menu options make it easy to move around drawings.

9.14  Show whole page [Shift]+[F2]
----------------------------------
This option re-sizes the topmost window to the limits of the page as 
defined in the 'Page format' dialog (refer to 5.9 for details) and is the 
quickest method to obtain an overall view of your drawing.

9.15  Previous view [Shift]+[F3]
--------------------------------
This option redraws the topmost window at its previous zoom level, the 
window is not re-sized. The last two zoom percentage values for each 
window is stored internally.

9.16  Zoom mode [Shift]+[F4]
----------------------------
When this option is activated a small tick is displayed before the menu 
entry and all tools in the icon window are de-selected. Using a click and 
drag action define the desired zoom window and release. The maximum zoom 
percentage is 999% and selected areas smaller than 2x2 pixels are ignored. 
The selected area is zoomed to fill the current window. Selecting any tool 
from the icon window or re-selecting the 'Zoom mode' menu option cancels 
this mode.

9.17  Zoom percentage [Shift]+[F5]
----------------------------------
Select this option to change the current zoom percentage of the topmost 
window. A pop-up menu appears from which the desired zoom level in the 
range 25%-800% can be directly selected. The current zoom setting is 
always displayed preceded by a small tick at the top of the pop-up list 
which makes a handy reference guide. The zoom level for each window is 
remembered separately. After selecting the desired zoom percentage the 
window is redrawn but not re-sized.

9.18  Save settings [F10]
-------------------------
This option stores the current settings in the 'Settings' drop down menu 
and the position of all the open windows, dialog boxes, printer parameters 
and the status information for any accessories in the file 'KNDINSKY.INF'. 
This file is read by Kandinsky at run time and used to restore your 
preferred working environment. See also the 'Settings automatically saved' 
option in the 'System settings' dialog, refer to 9.1.8.
