›››› These are some of the changes to PabQwk since version 1.0. This› file gives you a quick look at most of the new features. You may› still want to read the manual for more information.› › COMPATABILITY› -------------› › For some reason, I've found that some mail doors don't like to› follow the QWK format as rigidly as they are supposed to. And since I› didn't have access to these doors for the most part, I've relied on› bug reports from users. Special thanks to Wendell Hong for actually› sending me a packet from one door (no finger pointing now) that took› extreme liberties.› › PabQwk has been tested, THOROUGHLY, on the following mail doors,› and has come through with flying colors:› › PCBoard: QMAIL4, MARKMAIL› Remote Access: RAMAIL, MKQWK› Spitfire: JETMAIL› WildCat!: TOMCAT› › If you have any problems with a program other than those listed› above, please send me a packet through GE Mail to P.SUNGENIS1, or via› the U.S. Mail at the address listed in the main documentation. I'd› appreciate finding out how others have bastardized this format through› the years.› › › COMPATABILITY› -------------› › Probably the biggest change to PabQwk is the fact that the newest› version WILL run on non-ANTIC upgrades. This is the problem most› people have complained about, and was therefore the first one› addressed.› PabQwk defaults to non-ANTIC mode. If you have a stock XE, or an› ANTIC-compatible upgrade, I suggest using the configuration program to› turn ANTIC mode on. See pages 9-12 of the main documentation for more› on this.› › › PACKET SIZE› -----------› › PabQwk now uses a variable maximum packet size. The maximum› number of messages now depends on your system configuration.› If you have more than 128K, or 128K under MYDOS, PabQwk can use› one bank for its index. Under this setup, the maximum number of› messages in a packet is 2300. This is, to be honest, more than most› people are willing to read or most SysOps are willing to let a user› download at once.› If you have an ANTIC-compatible upgrade, and have ANTIC mode›››››››››››››› turned on (see above), the "Standard indexing" mode will give you a› maximum packet size of 750 messages. If ANTIC mode is off, Standard› indexing gives you a maximum of 500 messages.› › › BUG FIXES› ---------› › + The "Use prepared text file" mode of entering a message has› been fixed.› › + A minor problem with scrolling the message text window was› fixed.› › › PRESCANNING› -----------› › The length of time needed to load a packet is what generated the› SECOND largest number of complaints, including those from myself. So› this was the next thing to be addressed:› First, the display is shrunk down to one line to speed up the› prescan process, and text file processing when entering a message.› Secondly, the first time you access a packet, PabQwk will write a› file called [bbsid].NDX to the directory the packet is in. This file› contains the custom index PabQwk made internally while scanning› MESSAGES.DAT. This means the program will only have to go through› MESSAGES.DAT once. This cuts the time required to load the packet› from 3-10 minutes to as little as 20 seconds on subsequent reads.› The [bbsid].NDX file also contains a time-date stamp, for› comparison with the time and date in CONTROL.DAT. This lets PabQwk› know if you changed packets without erasing the index.› › › TRANSLATION› -----------› › The translation table and character set were changed to provide› better conversion of IBM's "high ASCII" characters. This is most› obvious in files which include shading.› › › NEW REGISTERED FEATURES› -----------------------› › Two new features have been added for registered users:› › + A "bookmark" feature allows you to mark your place while› reading through a large packet. This bookmark will also be written to› disk if you leave the program, so you don't lose your place.› › + A "print message" command has been added. Hitting
while› reading a message will dump that message to your printer or a disk›››››››››››››› file, as specified by the configuration program.› › › TAGLINES› --------› › The
