Review: Galactic Chase By The CiscoKid

Galactic Chase is an obvious ripoff of Namco's arcade game Galaxian. This of course was a major thing to do by small software houses back in the day when an official software license was financially impossible for them to come by. Sometime small embellishments would be made so the game would have some personality of it's own (Ie- Preppie, Sea Dragon, etc.) but not in this case. The game isn't bad but it is by no means in the same class as Atari's excellent official version.

Galactic Chase Screen Shot

Galactic Chase was on the market quite a while before Atari released Galaxian. It was sold mail order through small ads in Antic magazine so it is a rather obscure title. The graphics in Galactic Chase are not bad, the alien critters look similar to their legitimate arcade cousins. The action is a bit slow, the aliens definently don't have the killer instict that they do in the Atari version. One really bad point about the graphics is the terrible attempt to do a scrolling starfield in the background. Basically a couple of missile graphics alternate positions on the screen every second or so... it is quite irritating.

Official Atari Galaxian

All in all, this game isn't bad but this is by no means an Atari classic. What is is though is a reasonable well done bootleg. If you want to play an obscure version of Galaxian that the history books have long forgotten then here's your chance.
