PC Computer Systems

In 1987 Atari Corp decided to try and enter the IBM PC compatible clone market.    There systems were varied from an IBM XT clone up to a 386SX clone and even a 386SX laptop computer (which was actually nothing more then an Epson/Sotec laptop in Atari clothing.)       Atari failed to advertise, to get enough coverage and to strike up deals with dealers for counter space for demo systems.   Most people never knew Atari ever made desktop PC systems and a laptop system.   The only PC compatible system that was noticed was the Atari Portfolio palmtop.

However it has been recently discovered that Atari, Inc's Home Computer Division (HCD) back in 1983-1984 were working on a dual processor 8088/6502 system which would have allowed an Atari 8-bit system to also go into an IBM compatibility mode.    So far details have been sketchy and it is believed this may be the Atari 1650XLD project.    We are also eageraly awaiting an actual photo of a mock-up system done by the Atari Industrial Design group.   More details as we find out.
