Holme's Atari/Classic Collection List 27-July-2000 ============================================================================= Due to alot of requests, many visitors are interested in my collection of classic video games related stuff. Well here is a quick document detailing in brief my collection. Expect a HTML version with pictures to follow. A description/story of what I collect and why I collect it: I am a huge fan of Atari related stuff, I guess this reaches back to when I was quite young, and was getting 'bored' with my then, first real computer , the Sega SC3000H, I loved the Sega, dont get me wrong, but around 1986 the support for the Sega in NZ turned a bit sour, and started drying up. Which is not surprising, as with a user base of only around 6000 in NZ, there's not alot of money to be shared for new games, etc, to come out. So I was dying for some new goodies. So looking through the local newspaper, I saw an add that jumped out at me, ATARI, 800XL, Disk Drive, Games, $200 ($100US). (a friend of my dad had an Atari 800(he used to lend this to me before I had the Sega), and Atari 130XE, and he had hundreds of games for it, so I knew I'd be well supported!). So I talked Dad into going over to check it out, and finally talked him into buying it for me. It had two joysticks, and two cartridges too! WOOP WOOP!! I remember now, spending most of my Saturdays down at my Dad's friend's place copying anything and everything I could onto as many disks as I could afford, and then spending my Sunday Afternoons, testing all my copies of stuff I'd got the day before. Heh, yes I was a little pirate, but it wasnt really something you thought too much about back then, especially when all your friends had C64's and they used to swap every game they had between themselves until everyone had it. I didnt really notice at the time, but the support for Atari's in NZ pretty much was drying up too at that time. Due to all the pirating? Who knows?! I only noticed this a couple of years later, when I had some money of my own, and went shopping for some NEW games, but found most places had none! Or they had old copies of games I had had for at least a year. The only thing new was a few 2600 games, which I hated, cause, 'look at those CRAP graphics', I use to say, 'Atari Computers can do way better!', and also The NEW Atari Lynx, which was way to dear for me! I had a savings of $40, which wasnt going to buy my a $365 unit, let alone the $79 games!! So I spent the money on more floppy disks, and copied the few remaining utils from the friend of my dad, and then played around with hacking into games to put my name or other things into the game. Hehe, Diskey II was great for this, I made several 'Cheat' versions of software too, Many hours it took, searching for the info that set the initial 'lives' option. I made cheats for Screaming wings(no ememies, except the bosses, fired on you), Grand Prix Simulation(the computer player didnt start, thus I could finally check out all those cool tracks!, plus various others too. I got into programming my favorite type of game then, which was the classic text adventure, but never did finish it, I actually ran out of memory on my 64kb 800XL, so gave up. But I did do a excellent BOS system, Basic.Operating System, based on DOS, but had heaps of cool features, including Full joystick control, formatting, copying, loading basic progs, and binary progs, showing pictures, printing screen dumps to printer, etc, etc, I wish I still had it, but unfortunately, in early 1995, I remember selling the 800XL, with most of my disks, as I had just brought an AMIGA 500, and also had a Turbo XT(10Mhz) PC, thus no room for my old Atari! This brings me to the stupid things to do category. Things I wish I didnt sell: 1. My First console: A Grandstand Fountain VGS with 10 Boxed games. Mum sold this when they brought me the SEGA SC3000H computer. Quite had to find now, with boxed games. 2. My First Computer: (well i did have a radio shack computer, with no tape drive before this, but couldnt do much with it so sold it in a garage sale.) A SEGA SC3000H, with tape drive, 12 Boxed Cartridges, many tapes, magazines etc. Mum sold this one day, when I was out, but I didnt notice for 2 weeks as I was busy with my new Atari 800XL. I almost went crazy when I found out. Oh well, i still had the Atari! These things are SO rare now that it's not funny! 3. My Favorite Computer: Atari 800XL, with hundreds of disks etc. Sold by me, for $150 to a local BBS sysop, why I did it, I dont know. What was I thinking?? I guess the fact I was moving into the PC world had something to do with it, I had recently discovered Hard Drives, and couldnt think of not having one! Oh well, at least they arent too hard to find. Well, I went on to own many computers made from bits and pieces, upgrade path went like this: Turbo XT 386SX16 486SX25 486SX33 486DX66 486DX66 x 2 Pentium 120 Pentium 200 Celeron 433 + Pentium II 350 I had my Amiga 500 up until the time I had 2 x DX66. I sold it to a guy for $750. Well, If you got this far, congraduations. ============================================================================ Anyway, My current Collection goes a little something like this: (Any NO, none of it is for sale!
