The
Atari 5200 "Super System" has one of the most stylish designs of all of
the 1980's videogame consoles. Its large size, high tech
clean wedge shaped look was unique. The key
Industrial designer on the 5200 system was Regan Cheng, the 5200
concept evolved from his design ideas and the inputs from fellow designers
in the design group. This was the way all of the Atari
products were developed. From ideas , critiques and refinements.
The inspiration for the look of the Atari 5200 as well as many other Atari
products came from the admiration of the low profile, high tech look of
a line of what can only be described as an audio aficionado's dream machine
line of stereo equipment from Bang & Olufsen.
Getting from point "A" to point "B" in the design of a product isn't always
something that simply happens overnight, nor is designing a new piece of
videogaming hardware that represented the worlds leader in home video gaming
entertainment. From start to finish, you will see many
of the various design stages that the Atari 5200 (originally known as the
Atari System X) went through before it became the now legendary game console
it is today. Enjoy this trip through time as you
look through the concept designs of what became the Atari 5200 SUPERSYSTEM.
